Catherine (Katie) Sellers Hutchens passed away on July 4th, 2021 at the age of 94, surrounded by her children. She was an interior designer and owner of Richard’s Furniture.
A member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Katie was a back row “regular” until her illness. Over the years, she delighted in serving two of the church’s ministries: Meals on Wheels and Augusta Family Promise.
Katie was born Bernatfalvi de Foldvary Katalina Maria Marta in Budapest, Hungary to Eggbeli Kormendy Marta Anna and Bernatfalvi Foldvary Gaza. In an effort to document her European heritage, she returned to her homes in Budapest, Hungary and Manya, Slovakia on several occasions. She narrated a video documentary that outlined her family’s escape from Hungary to the United States following World War II.
The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Katie. She enjoyed a nightly glass of wine, a delicious meal and the phrase “pour la bonne bouche.” She had a passion for traveling all over the world. Some of her favorite destinations were Bahamas, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Greece. She and her husband sailed with their family for many years at the Catawba Yacht Club. Her love for sailing was evident in her sailboat excursions around the Greek Isles.
Katie, affectionately known as “Nagy,” is survived by her three children Catherine Barnes (John), Neal Sellers (Mariah) and Liz Baggs (Hunter), seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Her children are grateful for the medical care and loving concern shown by the Harrington Park Health and Rehabilitation staff where she was a resident.
Katie’s final request was to be laid to rest at Grandfather Mountain in Linville, North Carolina where she lived for many years. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd.Print Obituary & Condolences
